Sensory Outreach Service

The Sensory Outreach Service is a small team of Occupational Therapists with experience and training in Sensory Integration.

What the Sensory Outreach Service does

They provide training and support to schools to help pupils manage with sensory differences. They offer whole school training, SENCo training and Sensory Champions training. The aim is to upskill teachers and school staff about what sensory processing is and universal strategies to support learners in school.

They also provide environmental support in the form of a Sensory Walkthrough to work with schools to make their spaces as sensory-friendly as possible.

From the Spring Term 2026, they will offer individual pupil support. Individual support will be made up of -

  • Teacher Meeting - gather insights on how sensory differences are appearing in the classroom and their impact on learning
  • Classroom and Transition Observations - identify what is working, triggers, and challenges in real time
  • Session - OTs work directly with the pupil alongside the teacher or support staff
  • Strategy Review - follow up with staff after strategies have been embedded to assess effectiveness
  • Additional Support - further sessions provided only if need is identified by OT

Who the Sensory Outreach Service support

The service criteria are -

  • pupils attending a Hull school
  • referrals completed by the SENCo
  • Parent or carer consented to the referral
  • evidence of sensory processing differences
  • sensory processing differences are creating a significant barrier to learning or having a direct impact on daily functioning within school

Further Information about the Sensory Outreach Service

The Sensory Outreach Service will work closely with the existing Sensory Processing Service within Hull. Information and resources about sensory processing are available on their website.

If the primary need for a pupil is at home, rather than school, a referral to the Sensory Processing Service will be more appropriate.
