Steps to Success Outreach Service

Steps to Success Outreach Service is a team of specialists, qualified and experienced teachers and support staff who work for the Venn Academy Trust Outreach Team. The Primary SEMH Support Team works with all primary schools within Hull as part of the Hull SEND Local Offer.

Who they support

They are trauma-informed practitioners and recognise that a child’s behaviour is a form of communication about the child’s state of mind. As a SEMH service, they can support behaviour which may be caused by a variety of factors, such as -

  • anxiety
  • anger, including anger about pervasive life situations or undisclosed difficulties
  • response to trauma or attachment difficulties
  • response to the wrong level of challenge in lessons
  • grief
  • underlying mental health problems
  • undisclosed physical, mental or sexual abuse

This list is illustrative, not exhaustive.

The Steps to Success Outreach Service is not the appropriate service to support with -

  • sensory overload
  • sensory profiling
  • frustration due to speech and communication difficulties

What they do

Steps to Success Outreach Service is all trauma-informed practitioners and focuses on understanding the impact of trauma by working with staff to build students' resilience through protective factors such as creating inclusive, safe environments and supporting staff to become emotionally available adults.

Working with schools when social, emotional or mental health issues are causing challenges or concerns. They work with education staff, advising and adapting appropriate resources to provide bespoke support. This work may include coaching, mentoring, whole school training, as well as individual advice and support regarding -

  • emotional regulation
  • wellbeing support
  • problem solving
  • target setting skills
  • curriculum adaptations

School is provided with a contract outlining all recommendations and how to implement strategies, as well as resources.

When will this happen

The Steps to Success Outreach Service is in school each week to support the staff in embedding the strategies advised. There is minimal contact with students, as they believe that positive change must always be led by the adults in the room. They do endeavour to ensure that students are aware of the process and encourage their input with the strategies advised.
