Universal City-wide training offer

This training is generic as there will be participants from different settings. Each session is repeated three times over the academic year. These could be used for new members of staff or for more experience staff as a refresher. Ideas can then be disseminated to other staff members. Access the Training Request Form.

  • general universal support strategies to support communication and interaction (KS 1 & 2 staff) - this covers a variety of strategies from the universal sections of the graduated approach document. It is meant as a refresher for established staff or an introduction for new members of staff
  • Widget Online – how to use it in the classroom (KS 1& 2) - this is a practical workshop. You will need to bring laptops and have a widget online login. It is a refresher for those familiar with Widget online or an introduction for those new to it. There will be a representative from Widget on the session who can hopefully answer questions too
  • general strategies to support secondary aged pupils (KS3 & 4 staff) - this covers a variety of strategies so would act as a refresher or basic introduction
  • independent workstations and adapting work (KS11 & 2 staff) - this looks at the idea of workstations and how they should be implemented. There is an opportunity to look at resources for independent work and adapting work
  • supporting regulation and 5 point scale (all staff) - this covers how to create and implement a 5 point scale. There is an opportunity to create a scale so come with a pupil in mind
  • social stories and comic strip conversations (all staff) - this session covers how to write social stories and comic strip conversations, ideas for social stories and comic strip conversations and there is an opportunity to write your own during the session
  • social skills groups including Lego (all staff) - this covers why social skills groups are a useful strategy, the practicalities around setting these up and an opportunity to take part in a Lego session with other participants

Whole school training

The content of these sessions is very similar to the sessions above however you book this for your setting so there is an opportunity to personalise it to your setting and pupils. It is also an opportunity for all your staff to take part so you can plan how to implement as a whole school.

  • communication and interaction linked to QFT & Universal support strategies (KS2 staff) - this covers a variety of strategies from the universal sections of the graduated approach document. It is meant as a refresher for established staff or an introduction for new members of staff
  • routine and structure link to QFT and universal support strategies (KS2 staff) - This covers a variety of strategies from the universal sections of the graduated approach document. It is meant as a refresher for established staff or an introduction for new members of staff
  • school and classroom environments – making adaptions to support communication and interaction (KS2 staff) - This covers a variety of strategies from the universal sections of the graduated approach document. It is meant as a refresher for established staff or an introduction for new members of staff
  •  Widget Online – how to use it in the classroom (any) - this is a practical workshop. You will need to bring laptops and have a Widget Online login. It is a refresher for those familiar with Widget Online or an introduction for those new to it
  • general strategies to support secondary aged pupils (KS3 & 4 staff) - this covers lots of basic strategies at the universal support level. It is based on pupil voice
  • independent workstations and adapting work (KS1 & 2 staff) - this looks at the idea of workstations and how they should be implemented. There is an opportunity to look at resources for independent work and adapting work
  • analysing and supporting behaviour from a communication and interaction perspective (any staff) - this session will look at ways of analysing behaviour and linking to a reason. This will then help you match to an appropriate strategy. Come with a pupil(s) in mind
  • supporting regulation and 5 point scale (can include meltdowns, shutdowns and social energy) (any staff) - this will cover: what is emotional regulation? What is a 5 point scale? How to create a scale. There will be an opportunity to create a scale so come with a pupil in mind. If you would like us to include the differences between meltdowns and shutdowns and the social energy approach just let us know
  • executive function (any staff) - this covers what executive function difficulties look like and how this might impact within the school environment. There are some practical strategies on how to support these difficulties
  • social stories and comic strip conversations (any staff) - this session covers how to write social stories and comic strip conversations, ideas for social stories and comic strip conversations and there is an opportunity to write your own during the session
  • social skills groups including Lego (any staff) - this covers why social skills groups are a useful strategy, the practicalities around setting these up and an opportunity to take part in a Lego session with other participants
