Hull City Psychological Service believes that psychology can transform lives and make positive change possible. We do this with the ‘Helpful Conversations’ we have with others. We believe that for positive change to happen, differences need to occur between people in and through their communication and conversations with each other. These don’t have to be big changes, only significant.
We recognise the importance of relationships in the work we do and think that relationships create the safety and trust to have conversations where change can take place. Similarly, trust, safety and security are created within systems by building relationships. This is why the psychology we practice in Hull is a relational approach.
Here at Hull City Psychological Service, we believe that in order to have a helpful conversation with another the following may be happening -
- introducing something different
- bringing in new ideas and perspectives
- talking about things in a different way
- hearing things in a new way
- accepting invitations to reflect
- opening up to new possibilities for change
The educational psychologist works to develop double or multiple descriptions of events to make ‘news of difference’ which helps to support change. This effectively becomes a new description of the problem and is in contrast to the original view and creates a safe space from which new responses can then unfold.
