Legal Enforcements

Information about school penalty notices can be accessed on the Hull City Council website.

Attendance Contracts

An attendance contract is a written agreement between the school, the parent, and sometimes the council.

It says what everyone will do to help the child go to school more often.

It’s not a legal order, but it shows that everyone is working together.

If the contract is breached by the parent and the child still misses school, the council may take further action.

School Attendance Orders

A School Attendance Order is a legal notice from your local authority that requires your child to attend a specific school. It’s used when the council believes your child is not receiving a suitable education, either at school or through home education.

You might get a School Attendance Order if -

  • your child is not on roll at a school, and you have not taken steps to apply for a school place
  • you are educating your child at home, but the council isn’t satisfied that it is suitable and efficient
  • you have not responded to requests for information about your child’s education

The order will -

  • name a school your child must attend
  • be legally required to register your child at that school
  • stay in place until your child is no longer of compulsory school age, unless it’s changed or cancelled
