Supported Internships: Creating Pathways to Employment for Young People with SEND
Supported internships are structured, work-based programmes designed for 16 to 24-year-olds with an Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP). These internships are ideal for young people who are nearly ready for employment but need additional experience and tailored support to take that final step into the world of work.
At the heart of every supported internship is a meaningful work placement, supported by a dedicated job coach and tutor. With guidance from workplace mentors and managers, interns develop valuable, transferable skills and gain real-world experience, all with the aim of progressing into sustainable paid employment.
This video, commissioned by Hull City Council’s Young People Skills and Employability team and funded by the Department for Employment’s Internships Work initiative, offers a closer look at supported internships in action. It shares the stories of local young people with SEND who have taken part in the programme, and shows the positive impact it's had on their confidence, skills, and future opportunities.
